Residence Hall Testing Schedule

Dear Residents of University Housing,

As the final weeks of the fall semester begin, many of us are beginning to plan for the Thanksgiving break. An important part of this planning is pre-departure testing. Testing before leaving for break is an important step you can take to help ensure the safety of each other, your local community, and the family and friends you may see over Thanksgiving.

We will continue to test residents of University housing on our current schedule, at least once every nine days, through November 20 (see testing schedule in the table below). Our public health experts recommend that you test within nine days of your departure, so for many of you the regularly-scheduled testing will also serve as pre-departure testing. Others of you may have specific travel-related testing requirements or concerns. Those students can refer to the Return To Grounds Monitoring and Testing page for more information about voluntary testing options.

Regardless of when you test, please remember that a negative test result is not a "free pass"; it only reflects your COVID status at the point when you were tested. It is extremely important that you practice good COVID safety protocols – including wearing a mask, social distancing, washing your hands, and avoiding large gatherings – after your test and throughout your travels. Local health officials at your destination might have additional guidance or requirements; we encourage you to seek that information out before travelling beyond Charlottesville.

If you test positive for COVID-19 – whether through our prevalence testing or a pre-departure test – or are identified as a close contact of someone who tests positive, you will need to follow our existing protocols on isolation and quarantine, and participate in contact tracing efforts. We encourage all students to have a plan for where they would isolate or quarantine if that becomes necessary. Our isolation and quarantine spaces will remain open for students living in University housing who test positive before departure or are approved to remain on Grounds during the break.

Finally, as we announced last June, in an effort to minimize travel and possible transmission of the virus, we are asking students to return to their home communities at Thanksgiving and not return until the start of the spring semester. We understand that for some students, Charlottesville is their permanent home. We also understand that there are some undergraduates who cannot return home, and we ask them to please see the Friday, Oct. 30 email from Housing & Residence Life, or visit the Winter Break & Spring 2021 web page for information about how to retain access to  housing (if eligible) or apply for Winter Break Housing.

Thanks to your efforts, we are on track to end the Fall semester in a good position related to COVID-19. This could change quickly, as we have seen with recent trends nationally. We believe that robust pre-departure testing is a key part of making the Thanksgiving break as safe as possible for our University community, our neighbors, and our families.
