FAQs for Community


We recognize that the University’s decisions affect our neighbors in Charlottesville and the surrounding area, a fact that is especially true as it relates to matters of public health. We are committed to providing members of our broader community with the information they need as we continue to plan for the Fall semester. Please use this site and its contents as a resource – we plan to keep it up to date as new information is available. In addition to the general information available on this site, we will develop FAQs addressing issues of particular relevance to residents of Charlottesville and the surrounding area.

Our commitment to frontline workers

UVA is committed to protecting our front-line workers and providing resources to support all faculty and staff.

  • As more members of the University’s workforce return to their on-Grounds workplaces this summer, UVA HR has prepared a training module to provide all employees with information they need to know. Managers receive additional training to help them prepare to support their teams.
  • UVA is placing thousands of hand sanitizer stations across Grounds, distributing reusable cloth face coverings to every employee, and making adjustments to our physical plan and services to promote social distancing and allow for thorough cleaning and sanitation. These adjustments include installing signs across Grounds and barriers at public service locations, repositioning fixtures and furnishings, reducing capacity of spaces across Grounds (e.g., buses, classrooms, dining, retail, conference rooms, elevators), changing policies and procedures, and shifting service hours to allow for thorough cleaning and sanitation. 
  • UVA HR helps employees navigate all aspects of working at the University during the pandemic. The UVA HR website includes information about managing leave (including new leave types introduced this spring) and working remotely. HR also provides guidance to managers to help them develop staffing plans that will meet business needs of their organizations while accommodating personal circumstances of employees. Through its Employee Community Resource Service, UVA HR also provides financial budgeting and planning assistance to employees. To supplement UVA’s robust benefits program, the University added a telemedicine benefit and expanded back-up care benefits in the spring.
  • The University provides resources to support employees’ mental and emotional wellbeing through the Faculty and Employee Assistance Program (FEAP) and Hoos Well.
  • UVA will help employees stay focused on their health through a daily health check app and direct employees to resources if they experience symptoms of COVID-19. The University also will make symptomatic COVID-19 testing available to employees this fall, as well as asymptomatic testing, as availability allows.

We have made and will make every single decision about our plans in close consultation with physicians and public health professionals. Every student, faculty, and staff member who will be on Grounds this Fall will have to meet certain health and safety requirements designed to keep members of the UVA and broader community safe. It is important to note that our plans could change based on the spread of the virus, the advice of public health experts, or an order by the Virginia Department of Health. We sincerely hope that will not be the case, but our top priority will always be keeping our entire community safe—and we will let you know if circumstances require us to adjust.
